1968 Contour Chair by David Colwell MDesRCA

Furniture designer David Colwell

To celebrate Trannon's 30 years, David Colwell is releasing a limited run of his award winning Contour Chair
as in the V&A, Geffrye, Vitra and Design Museums' permanent collections.

Its transparent acrylic shell (available in clear, smoked or blue) is hand stretched from a hot flat sheet and mounted on to a stainless steel frame.
Experiencing its smooth supportive contour is a must.

It was featured in the landmark exhibition 'Modern Chairs' at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1970, after which the V&A purchased two examples.
Other awards include an RCA Silver Medal and the ICI Perspex Design Award.

Developed during late 1967-68 and first shown at the '68 RCA Degree Show, the chair was the result of a two year involvement with ICI Plastics,
David also designed a reception desk and a number of jewellery showcases lit only by fibre optics.

All explored free forming Perspex sheets without moulds. Rectangular shapes were plunged into hot acrylic sheets, self-creating subtle contours
whilst increasing strength and preserving optical clarity due to the absense of mould contact.

Mouldless forming meant that David could produce impressive designs without prohibitive tooling costs, an elegant philosphy which is carried over
to Trannon's steam bent chairs today.
